Okay, so. Round three is here and now that the greatest movies of all time have been eliminated maybe we can settle in and accomplish something. This round we have a barn burner between Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, a matchup between
I don’t understand how Hunt for Red October got beat out. It was such a close adaptation to the book and in my top 10 of all time movies. It was well acted and had a great cast. I was truly disappointed with the second movie which bore a resemblance to the book only in the title bring the same.
Of course, it’s not a love story or a book one reads as a child so maybe that has something to do with it. 🤷🏻♀️
This is quite an eye opening and puzzling contest. I really want to go and watch all these movies as they appear in the bracket against each other and see what I think. I think it would be surreal considering the pairings.
Perhaps. I expected it to be weird. But if that’s true, what you say, then I would say it’s a bit strange that Lion King and Harry Potter 3 are winning.
I’m shocked that Harry Potter is still going. The movies, in my experience, are not very compelling. I truly didn’t expect it to last the first round. And then I didn’t expect it to get through the second. And now it’s beating Brideshead. Tell me what I’m missing, y’all. Are we kinda voting for the books and story in general, and not for the adaptation?
I am guessing its a number of factors: 1) some people are just voting for what they have seen. 2) some people are just voting for books they like. 3) Some people have weird taste. lolol
We might not should do this during the last dregs of winter weather (and the final push of the school year for some) when we’re all about to lose our minds anyway.
It is a beautiful movie. The cinematography is gorgeous and the part where Jo writes her family's story is very inspirational to anyone who ever wanted to become a writer. Anyone who has actually read the book though, will have to admit there are very big differences between the movie and the book. It goes well past what an adaptation should be and falls in the realm of loosely inspired by the ideas contained in Louisa May Alcott's writings. The reordering of the story line over plays the drama and makes sweet moments way too melodramatic. Florence Pugh as Amy was a horrible casting call. I think she is a fantastic actress and have loved her in everything I've seen, but she does not fit the Amy character in any way. It is like casting David Tennant as Hercules or Helen Mirren as Helen of Troy. I liken this pairing of book and movie to the Mr. Popper's Penguin movie with Jim Carrey and the book by the same name. Both are entertaining and the character names are mostly the same, but other than that they have very little in common with their namesake.
This doesn't belong here, but I don't know where to ask. I haven't seen a reading schedule for The Diary of A Country Priest. I know the first two chapters are for the first podcast. I'd appreciate a schedule! I'd also like a schedule for the 2nd Ransom book. Thank you!
I think I’m going to have to round up more voters who think like me.

Maybe this is a cautionary tale about asking a bunch of book readers to vote on movie adaptations.

COMMON PEOPLE. Brideshead Revisited is SUCH a great adaption.
With this bracket, it feels like Close Reads has jumped the shark
I don’t even disagree!
LOL, and alas. Don't leave us behind!
This observation is hilarious, Debbie Wallace. These brackets have come a long way. 😂
In the end , Pride and Prejudice or Anne of Green Gables will probably win. It’s just the road to get there lol
Agreed! And neither are bad choices, in and of themselves. My husband is impressed with your seeding - it will be all 1 and 2 seeds in the final four.
That’s what keeps the brackets interesting for sure! 😉

Haha. Yeah. All true, I’m sure.
Lol. The track record for my picks...
Round 1: 15/32
Round 2: 4/16
Round 3 (so far): 4/8
You and me both
I’m rooting for muppets.

The 2019 Little Women was a terrible adaptation. Lion King should be winning by a landslide
I haven’t heard that very often! I think it’s amazing. What do you dislike about it?

Agree to disagree, I suppose. haha
Anne of Green Gables vs Mary Poppins. What kind of monster makes a person choose?! I just cried a little while voting.

Chapters 1-2.
Perelandra schedule isn’t ready yet. Doing the Q and A next.

Fellowship of the Ring movie brought me to read Tolkien for the first time (in my mid forties!) I will always be grateful to Peter Jackson! 🥰🥰🥰
Me too!
Muppets?!? 😩
