It closed early! I woke up this morning realizing I needed to core and I had 20 minutes before 10 eastern and it won’t let me vote. Bummer!

Let’s take down Frodo and Sam to clear the way for Jeeves and Wooster!

I'd rather have them face off in the final match.

What about Paddington and Puddleglum?

I'm glad I remembered in time to vote! I have to come up with a better decision-making paradigm because nearly all of them were different. Going from Legolas and Gimli vs Merry and Pippin and choosing Legolas and Gimli because of the growth in the relationship to Iago and Othello vs Gollum and the Ring and deciding Iago and Othello because it was more destructive (Gollum's obsession, while destroying himself, kept the Ring out of play for a long time.) Why I decided that, I dunno.

I know that Robin Hood and Little John will lose to Harry and Ron, but Robin Hood has always been my favorite, and I was just happy to see him in the list.

A true duo, each bringing their particular strengths to the partnership and doing it with style.

Seeing the votes, I am convinced that most theatrical productions have failed to successfully communicate the brotherhood of Hamlet and Horatio.

Yes. It's a long story. Someone has to be cut. Alas, Horatio, we did not know you at all.

Thank you for another great bracket! Some of these match ups were brutal! We are pulling for Tin Tin and Snowy. :)

And since you asked about duos we’d like to see listed… Betsy-Tacy as well as Scarlett O’Hara/Melanie Hamilton.

Some of these duos are hardly that at all, but number 9 killed me. Finally, I chose Capt Aubrey and Stephen but very few have. Maybe they don't know the duo. Sad state.

Which ones do you not believe are duos?

If, as you say, a duo is a best friend, a co-conspirator, or a sidekick then Jekyl and Hyde don't qualify as they do not exist in the same time frame, Iago is none of these to Othello (and vice versa) and just because Jim didn't wish Silver dead doesn't mean the pirate was in any way considered a friend. Nick was just an observer of Gatsby's pretensions, never a true friend (IMHO), though he may have been the closest thing to a friend Jay ever had. The Artful Dodger lets Oliver be captured by the authorities, some friend!

Hey, the whole concept is gray area.

Except that sometimes you get a true pair where neither character could be their best, perhaps might not even exist without the other. Sam and Frodo for example. How far would Frodo have gotten without Sam's strength? Sam went on the journey because of his loyalty to Frodo. When a true friendship occurs it's a sort of magic. The reader will cry and laugh with the duo on the page (or screen), feel love for them, fear for their lives, and later they will recall it all every time they see a meme. It's not gray at all. I would have voted for Sergeant Fred Colon and Corporal Nobbs as a duo and I am quite fond of Phileas Fogg and Passepartout.

That’s why some of the duos are seeded as 1 and 2 and 3 seeds and some are 15s and 16s. The lower seeds are duos in the sense that we experience the books in part through their sense of or the question of or the suggestion of their relationship.

#7 helped me realize that Claudio and Hero are not interesting characters to me… I think Benedick and Beatrice together could go the distance, but these two paired with each of them will be an easy out.

Well they are a couple, not a duo.

True… duos that will get kicked to the curb. Never would I ever choose them over Calvin and Hobbes. 🙂
