When I first read this in high school, eons ago, I was told the end was hopeful, but it didn't feel that way to me. I didn't have the words then to articulate what y'all said so well. I want to read that last paragraph again with Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" playing as background. With no destination, that's all there is, an endless journey of ever-reaching.
Funny you should make that observation because I heard Adam Curtis say virtually the same thing about Sally Rooney this week too. It's the closest it's made me come to liking her (NB that I do think she's got something, it just wasn't something I found very sympathetic until he said that).
