In this week’s episode on Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles, David, Heidi, and special guest Karen Swallow Prior chat about artistic and naturalistic determinism in Hardy’s work, his hatred of Victorian moralism, and whether or not the novel idealizes Tess. And treacle. Definitely treacle.
My first time reading Tess and also following along in real time with Close Reads! So glad to be here. The material is so sensitive and I just find myself in mourning so often as I read. Hardy's view of such a merciless Christianity, Victorian society, and Tess's (Tess'? Grammar?) misfortunes are so difficult and to have commentary is both comforting and expanding. My one comic relief is that all I hear and picture for Sir John is actor Phil Davis!
