It’s the most wonderful time of the year, which means it’s also the time of the year when we’re talking about our favorite reads of 2022! We each have our own strategy for making these lists and inevitably the books we discuss on this episode are oddly specific, wonderfully fascinating, and always worth reading. So grab something to take notes, get ready to add to your TBR list, and settle for a long winter’s podcast on books, books, and more books.
Now I am more excited than ever to dig into my Close Reads elf exchange gift, The Great Passion! Bach is my hero and Evening in the Palace of Reason, which Sean mentioned, was one of my top 5 reads of the year, so now hearing The Great Passion so highly recommended I simply can’t wait to start it!
Wow, what a great podcast. I am reading Ethic of Beauty at the moment as well, and a friend introduced me to this podcast. I will say, reading it has taken longer because I kept reading books Dr Patitsas referenced: the Body Keeps the Score and also The Timeless Way of Building. However, it is definitely a remarkable book. Fun to hear a few of you mention it. I look forward to the graphic because there were several books mentioned, I would like to discover. I look forward to listening to more of your podcasts.
I loved this episode. Thank you all! I’m putting Elizabeth Taylor high up on my 2023 list. I have read so many 20th century British women writers (my favorite niche), but never Taylor!
You guys are the best. Thanks for this - it was the perfect background conversation for my Christmas Eve baking day. Looking forward to 2023 - starting off with my all-time favorite Jane Austen. ❤️ Merry Christmas, my virtual friends!
Hey Tim, Re: The Scottish Enlightenment, check out this episode of CBC Ideas where the host walks through the streets of Edinburgh talking about the figures highlighted in the book. https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.4503569

Now I want to read The Great Passion after downloading a sample on my Kindle. Thank you for telling about books that I would otherwise have missed.
I loved the episode. I have to read Sonorous Desert, The Need to Be Whole (a new Wendell Berry!), and The Ethic of Beauty.
I want insider info on Sean’s reading list. All his books are now on my TBR list. Great show!

My birthday is April 23rd, so I’ve always said that the 23rd is Shakespeare’s birthday. I believe he died on that day, too.
How can we join the Ethics of Beauty reading group?
One of my favorite episodes of the year. Makes my Goodreads list sooooo much longer 😁
