David McCloskey knows spy fiction. Having been a CIA analyst in a former life, he knows what makes a spy novel realistic and as a novelist he knows what makes the drama work. His 2021 novel, Damascus Station, is one of my favorite books of recent vintage precisely because it blends the two so beautifully. So on this episode of Bibliography, McCloskey joined the show to discuss some of his favorite books in the genre—new and old—as well as several other books that have defined his reading life over the years. Careful: You’re TBR list is about to get longer.
Just a few weeks ago I read my first spy novel ever! I started with The Spy Who Came in From the Cold but I enjoyed it so much I’ve read 2 more Le Carre novels in the last 3 weeks. Glad to have some new recommendations to explore in my new favourite genre! 😄 Really enjoyable interview, thanks!
Looking forward to listening! I read Damascus Station on your recommendation David, and thought it was so well done! (If a little more anxiety inducing because of depicting more current events. Anyone else need a little more historical "space" to enjoy more intense books? Could just be me and 2022, 21, 20 etc ;)
