This week David, Heidi, and Ian discussed whether the Count has changed over the course of the story, whether he is a “whole” character, David’s wild (pretend) theory about this book, and more on Towle’s approach to POV. Happy listening!
Don’t worry, I was not upset at all! 😉 I was thrilled to hear you guys hash out the topic. I want to go back and listen to David’s thoughts again; clearly this hits a nerve for him! I’d actually love to hear more about POV, especially in this novel. I do think it’s possible to “break the 4th wall” in a book - when you address the reader directly it changes the relationship between author, narrator, and reader.
Ian, have you heard Chris Thile's album with Brad Mehldau? It is MIND BLOWING. Thanks for sharing about this set from Blue Note! Just listened to My Oh My - one of my favorites by Punch Brothers. So good. There aren't many things that will make me stop in the middle of a Close Reads episode to go do something else, but jazz/bluegrass fusion is one of them, ha!
Jill, great to run across this comment. I've been obsessively following Thile for over 20 years now, and his record with Mehldau is truly great. One of my favorites for gray, rainy days. We must chat about this if we ever meet in person!
LOL, yes! But isn’t that just like my Count-As-Narrator theory? It’s clearly not revealed as being that way, but if you read the whole thing with that in mind, it *all makes sense*

I audibly gasped at Top Gun theory
