A Programming Update for February & March
The Road, The Hobbit, Kristin Lavransdatter book 2, and more
Hey friends!
We have so much going on these days, here in the Close Reads/Goldberry extended universe. Heidi is busily working on a book about duty and desire in literature; Tim is living his best new-dad life while working an incredibly busy job; Sean is teaching a full load and parenting while still managing to write essays in defense of Anthony Trollope; my wife, Bethany, is finishing up Lumen, a really great art curriculum she’s been working on for a few years; Goldberry is enduring a massive construction project right in front of the shop; and, of course, we just announced our next Close Reads gathering, which will take place in October and will contemplate wit and laughter in literature. We will have more announcements and information coming soon, but for now I just want to say thanks for being a part of things and for including us in your lives. We’re grateful.

We still have a few more episodes to go in our series on The Warden but I know people may want to read ahead (or just plan ahead), so here are the reading schedules for the next few books.

Live poetry hour for February & March
Our next live poetry hour for CRHQ subscribers will take place on Tuesday, February 27. The poem (as discussed during last month’s session) will be W. H. Auden’s “Musee des Beaux Arts” (and we will probably include in the conversation the Brueghel painting the poem mentions).
As always, this conversation will take place on Zoom and the link will be sent to subscribers that morning. These have been really lovely conversations and I hope you’ll plan to join us!
Our tentative March date is 3/19, and we’ll discuss two Easter-themed poems. I’ll confirm the date and poems before too long.
Monthly Mysteries
Don’t forget about our monthly subscriber exclusive dedicated to classic mysteries. Last week we discussed Sayer’s Strong Poison. This month it’s an early Christie classic.
February: Mysterious Affair at Styles (early Agatha Christie)
March: Post after Post-Mortem (ECR Lorac)
April: Double Indemnity (James Cain) + movie
May: The Franchise Affair (Josephine Tey)
June: 2 Father Brown stories (GK Chesterton)
July: The Maltese Falcon (Dashiell Hammett) + movie
August: Jumping Jenny (Anthony Berkley)
September: The Case of the Gilded Fly (Edmund Crispin)
October: Death of Jezebel (Christianna Brand)
November: A Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side (later Agatha Christie)
December: The White Priory Murders (Carter Dickson)

Well that’s all for now. If you have any questions please post them in the comments below. Thanks so much for listening to the show and being a part of this community this year. Happy reading!
